Being a responsible pet owner, one of the most important health decisions you’ll make is to spay or neuter your cat or dog. Neutering will vastly improve your male pet’s behaviour and keep him close to home. Spaying requires minimal hospitalization and offers lifelong health benefits for your female pet. In British Columbia, surgery is both affordable and easily accessible.

Jet Pet Resort has put together this quick list of the Top 10 Reasons to Spay or neuter your pet.

#1: Spaying and neutering help fight pet overpopulation.

Unplanned litters lead to millions of cats and dogs being euthanized each year. Countless others will spend a miserable life as a stray. The best thing you can do to save dogs and cats from overpopulation is spaying or neutering.

#2: Spaying and neutering your pet is good for the community.

Spaying and neutering reduce the number of animals around the community. Stray animals pose a real problem. They can prey on wildlife, cause car accidents, damage the local fauna and frighten children.

#3: Your male dog is more likely to stay close to home.

The strong desire to mate has unaltered male dogs to do virtually anything to seek out a female.  And the male risks being injured in traffic fights with other male dogs, and any number of potential risks depending on where you live.

#4: Neutering provides major health benefits for your male.

Besides preventing unwanted litters, neutering your male companion prevents testicular cancer, if done before six months of age.

#5: Your neutered Pet will be much better behaved.

Neutered cats and dogs focus their attention on their human families. On the other hand, un-neutered dogs and cats may mark their territory by spraying strong-smelling urine all over. Many aggression problems can be avoided by early neutering.

#6: Your female pet will live a longer, healthier life.

Spaying your pet before her first heat offers the best protection against uterine infections and breast cancer – which is fatal in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats.

#7: Your spayed female won’t go into heat.

Female cats usually go into heat four to five days every three weeks during the breeding season. They yowl and urinate more frequently, and can cause unwanted messes and nuisances.

#8: Your pet WILL NOT become fatter.

Lack of exercise and overfeeding will cause your pet to gain weight – not neutering. Your pet will remain fit and trim as long as you continue to provide exercise and monitor food intake.

#9: Your pet doesn’t need to have a litter for you or your children to learn about the miracle of birth.

Don’t breed your pet so that you can simply to have familiarity with the experience. There are a variety of books and videos available to teach you and your children about birth in a more responsible way.

#10: It is highly cost-effective.

The cost of your pet’s surgery is a lot less than the cost of having and caring for a litter. It also trumps the cost of treatment when your un-neutered animal escapes and gets into a fight with another animal.

So there you have it. Aside from breeding purposes, it is hard to imagine why responsible pet owners wouldn’t want to help improve the overall life of their animals. Jet Pet Resort specializes in boarding pets that have been spayed or neutered. While we will make arrangements for unaltered pets, the better predictability of our spayed and neutered guests creates a more stable environment whereby all of our guests feel more comfortable.
