As Vancouver’s special needs dog care specialists, we know first hand how some pets require extraordinary patience, care, and expertise. Recently, we welcomed a rescue dog originally from China who had experienced severe trauma. She would shut down completely, facing walls and floors when stressed. Through careful, gradual introduction and our team’s specialized training, she’s now comfortable enough with us for her family to travel with peace of mind.
“We love to cater for different personalities and we understand that not everybody is the same, so we do our very best to accommodate those needs,” explains Fay Egan, Operations Manager, our care specialist. “It’s very easy to say this isn’t going to work, but we put that effort in because it’s needed, and it takes a lot of patience to get to that point.”
Whether your dog needs medication administration, has mobility challenges, requires skin condition management, or struggles with anxiety like our rescue friend, our Vancouver facility provides the individualized attention they deserve. Our Dog Force U trained staff and purpose-built Olympic Village location ensure every special needs pet receives professional care tailored to their unique requirements.
When Tessa first arrived at our Olympic Village facility, this large, high-energy mixed breed rescue seemed destined for disappointment. Her mom, a shift worker who desperately needed reliable daycare, had likely exhausted other options. Tessa couldn’t integrate immediately with regular group play, a challenge that would have meant rejection at most facilities.
“I believe that Tessa would have been turned away from many places because she could not integrate immediately with the crowd,” Fay explains. “A lot of the time when people come to us in situations like that, it is like the final straw. They may have been turned away from other places or been banned from a dog hiking group. They’re at their wits end and they don’t know what they’re going to do. The next step likely would be having to re-home the pet.”
But our team saw potential where others saw problems. We developed a specialized program for Tessa, introducing her to group play in short bursts while she spent most days in solo activities. Through weeks of one-on-one enrichment exercises—throwing tennis balls in corridors, individual cuddles with each team member—we built her confidence gradually.
We took the time because we wanted to make it work and put the effort in, and because we have the setup that enables us to take those steps. Today, Tessa enjoys full days of daycare, confident and happy. Her mom kept her job, kept her dog, and avoided the heartbreak of re-homing.
Our Vancouver facility provides comprehensive medical support for dogs requiring ongoing health management. From daily medication administration to monitoring chronic conditions, our Dog Force U trained staff ensure your pet’s special needs are met with precision and care. We accommodate everything from arthritis supplements to more complex prescription schedules, maintaining detailed logs to keep you informed.
With a lot of dogs with skin conditions that need their paws or their face wiped down every day and wrinkly dogs that get sores on their snout, we’ll do the morning, afternoon and evening face cleans. Our hypoallergenic products accommodate pets with environmental sensitivities, while our climate-controlled environment provides optimal comfort.
Understanding that rescue dogs and those with behavioral challenges need extra patience, we specialize in gradual introductions and stress-reduction techniques. Our team recognizes the difference between reactive behavior and shutdown responses, tailoring our approach to each dog’s comfort level and trauma history.
Rescue dogs enjoy the dog interaction and it tends to be the human interaction that we need patience with. We create safe spaces where anxious pets can decompress, using positive reinforcement to help them realize we’re “nice people.”
For dogs with physical limitations, we provide specialized accommodation including assistance with stairs, careful lifting protocols for pets who can’t be picked up, and comfortable Kuranda raised beds. We welcome guests who can’t be picked up, and ones who can’t do stairs, highlighting our staff’s understanding of diverse mobility needs.
Our staff training, combined with first aid certification is a gold standard in pet care education. We’ve helped families across Olympic Village, Yaletown, and Kitsilano, East Vancouver and beyond navigate complex care situations, building trust through transparent communication and proven results.
